Surfing Adventures
Samoa has waves all year round.
Go surfing in Samoa...
It is quite unique in the fact that it really doesn’t have any “beach breaks” as such. The majority of locations are either coral reefs or rock and powerful waves are generated from far away. Swells come from the deep southern ocean and intensify before hitting the South Shore of Upolu while north swells originating in Alaskan territory hit the North Shore via Hawaii. The so called “dry season” (April to November) normally sees the south shore getting all the swell with E to W winds, and during the “wet season” (December to March), with off shores on the south side, is when we expect the north swells to hit the north side of Upolu. But we still surf all around the island in either season, it just depends on swell direction and size, winds and tides.
There is a great diversity of wave types ranging form long point like breaks ( Salamumu Point) to very powerful bowling waves (Coconuts) to a great imitation of Sunset (Tiavea).
"Certain other general tourist resorts in Samoa are trying to market themselves towards travelling surfers, however they do not offer boat access to many surf breaks, and offer little expert knowledge of the various surf breaks and conditions.

At Sa'Moana Resort our expert International guides are employed to assess conditions, offer advice to guests, observe guest surfing ability, and offer suggestions as to where to sit and take off etc. Above all surfers are NEVER left unsupervised, and if an accident was to occur emergency procedures are in place to react immediately, and gain urgent medical assistance. Our boats on a couple of occasions have had to assist stranded independent surfers.
Sa’Moana is well equipped to get you to the surf. A large part of our surf travel is by either of our 2 boats. We have a 34ft aluminium twin hull craft powered by twin 85hp Yamaha motors, while our 29ft fibreglass mono hull is equipped with twin 75hp Yamaha motors. Both boats have shade canopies, ladders, storage areas and also are rigged for some serious fishing. Land accessed surf spots are accessed by either our Toyota 4x4 Twin Cab or one of two Toyota Air conditioned passenger vans. On most days it’s approximately 1 hour from the resort, thru some great scenery, to the breaks however the rewards once in the water are worth it.. That is of course apart from the lefts and rights at Resorts, straight out in front of the resort, and Village Lefts about 2 minutes away by car or van.

Surf Tourism in Samoa is still a relatively new activity. Who knows you might just find yourself surfing a spot that no one has before you, there are many unnamed and possibly unsurfed locations for Sa’Moana Resort to find. At this stage Samoa has only a handful of local surfers but it is important to show them the respect that is due to them as Samoans.
There are many good reasons why staying at Sa’Moana Resort and surfing with us is the go.. and there are a few we pride ourselves on. We maintain several permanent moorings at various breaks, protecting the fragile reef systems. We attempt to maximize surfer guest experience by keeping surfer no’s to 15 at any one time. By leaving locations as we find them if not then cleaner.
Respect.. we respect those few local surfers, the local Villages, their customs and beliefs and by making financial donations which will directly benefit and support their communities.
We’ve got some awesome uncrowded waves so to Book a surfing adventure with us please click here.
